Keep Humble: A Retro Font for Creative Projects

There I was, staring at a blank brand board, trying to figure out how to give a new café the right visual identity. The client wanted something warm, inviting, and a little nostalgic—something that felt like it belonged in a small town with a story to tell. That’s when I pulled out Keep Humble, a retro handwritten font that felt just right.

Keep Humble has a distinct personality. It’s not too flashy, but it has that effortless charm of a handwritten script from the 60s and 70s. The strokes are soft, the curves are gentle, and there’s a sense of authenticity that makes it feel like it was written by hand, not designed on a computer. It’s the kind of font that can add character without overwhelming a design.

Testing it on a logo draft was the first step. I played around with different sizes and weights, seeing how it looked on a simple wordmark. What stood out was how it could hold its own as a headline font while still feeling approachable. It wasn’t too ornate, which made it easy to use in a variety of contexts—from packaging to social media graphics.

One of the things I love about Keep Humble is how it works in different design scenarios. On a shop sign, it added a personal touch that felt like it was meant to be there. On a business card, it gave the brand a friendly, human quality. Even on a product label, it brought a sense of nostalgia that could resonate with customers looking for something unique.

Readability was a concern at first. Handwritten fonts can sometimes be tricky, especially when used in longer text. But Keep Humble surprised me. It maintained clarity even at smaller sizes, making it a good choice for short-form text like captions or taglines. It didn’t compromise legibility, which is essential for any font used in branding or marketing materials.

In terms of visual hierarchy, Keep Humble excels as a display or accent font. It can draw attention without being distracting. When paired with a clean sans serif or a classic serif, it creates a balanced look that feels both modern and timeless. I found that using it for headlines and then pairing it with a more structured typeface for body text helped maintain consistency across different design elements.

For a café project, I used Keep Humble on the main logo, website headers, and social media posts. It worked well in each context, adding a sense of warmth that matched the client’s vision. The font also had a nice balance of styles—regular, bold, and alternate versions—that gave me flexibility without complicating the design process.

When working with clients, I always recommend testing a font before committing to it. Keep Humble is no different. I suggest trying it out on mockups, printing samples, and seeing how it looks in real-world situations. This helps ensure that it fits the brand’s tone and purpose.

Another thing to consider is font pairing. While Keep Humble is great on its own, it can also complement other fonts. A sleek sans serif like Montserrat or a classic serif like Georgia can create a nice contrast that highlights the uniqueness of the handwritten style. This is especially useful when designing for digital platforms where clarity and readability are key.

Keep Humble also has practical benefits. It includes multiple weights and ligatures, which make it easier to use in different design systems. The multilingual support is a plus for brands that operate in multiple regions. Plus, the commercial licensing makes it safe to use in client projects without worrying about legal issues.

From a creative standpoint, using Keep Humble felt like finding the perfect piece of typography that fit the project’s mood. It wasn’t just about aesthetics—it was about creating a connection. The font added a layer of storytelling that made the brand feel more personal and authentic.

Whether you’re designing a logo, packaging, or a website header, Keep Humble offers a versatile and stylish option that can elevate your work. It’s a font that understands the balance between retro charm and modern functionality, making it a valuable addition to any designer’s toolkit.

As I wrapped up the café project, I knew that Keep Humble had played a key role in shaping the brand’s visual identity. It wasn’t just a font—it was a part of the story we were telling. And that’s what great typography does: it brings a design to life, making it more than just a collection of elements.
